Just found this in a thrift store - I believe it's from 1979. What a great primer on pre-Crisis Superman - any of you who hear about Pre-Crisis Supes, but don't know what we're talking about, should give this book a read. It presents Superman's 'life story', and it brings you up to speed on all the characters in the Superman family, Supes' relationship to each of them, and how they were portrayed in the 70's. Lots of fun, kinda goofy, great Curt Swan art. I loved it almost as much as 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?'

Another fun Pre-Crisis Superman read - the DC Comics Presents story that teams him up with Swamp Thing. Very odd tale.

Someone here with a 1985 calendar and a good grasp of DC's publishing schedule credited the Swamp Thing team-up ('The Jungle Line' as the very last pre-Crisis appearance of the Silver Age Superman. (I still anticipate his first post-Crisis appearance. He's out there somewhere. I just know it.) 'Jungle' was written by Alan Moore, who did 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?'a few months later.

'Jungle' is an outstanding story, one of the very best ever, and again gives the lie to the idea that compelling stories about the supposedly godlike Silver Age version of the character couldn't be written, yadda yadda yadda.

Agreed. It was such a well done story, you got to the end and couldn't believe it was over already - you wanted it to keep going. That hasn't yet happened in a current comic for me . . .
