Historically, chronologically, or continuity-wise?

Historically, I believe it would be the cover of one of the 1940 NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR commemorative comic, although Superman and Batman did not appear together in any stories in that issue. Their first on-panel appearance together was a cameo in ALL-STAR COMICS #7, in October 1941 (a Justice Society of America story). The first adventure they shared was on the ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN radio series in early 1945 (which was part of Earth-Two continuity, according to WORLD'S FINEST #271). They also both participated in a JSA adventure in ALL-STAR COMICS #36, in August-September 1947.

Chronologically, Clark Kent first met Bruce Wayne in ADVENTURE COMICS #275 (August 1960), in a story set before the murder of Bruce's parents; Bruce temporarily assumed the identity of the 'Flying Fox' and helped Superboy capture a gang of criminals. In that story, both were of high school age, maybe 14 years old (which is not consistent with earlier accounts of the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne, but who's counting?).

In present continuity, the first meeting between Superman and Batman was in MAN OF STEEL #3; I don't know of any stories set chrnologically earlier than that one.

ALL-STAR

Actually, IMHO, the earliest meeting of Bruce and Clark was in flashback in WORLD'S FINEST COMICS #84, in which Bruce comes to Smallville, ferrets out Superboy's secret identity, and refuses to divulge it to gangster Thad Linnis. The Flying Fox incident was second

Great answer!

Of course, everyone thinks that historically, the first story in which the two revealed their secret identities to each other was Superman #76 (dated May/June 1952).

But did you know... there was a cameo of Bruce Wayne in a Superman story titled 'Superman's Secret Revealed' in Superman #20 (dated Jan/Feb 1943)? Besides the All-Star #7 (Oct 1941) that Aaron mentioned, this is the earliest cameo of Bruce Wayne in a Superman comic book story that I know of.

Does anyone know of any other early cameo appearances?

respectfully submitted, Kirk Ticknor
