OK. we all have artists that we think is the best ever to have drawn superman. i have heaps that i have liked through the years. The original team of Seigel and Shuster, Wayne Boring, Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson, Rick Hoberg, George Perez (always high on my list of the greats), Jerry Ordway, Immonen, the truly fantastic Alex Ross (my very favourite). I know there are heaps I have missed, but i am going by memory here. Who are all of your favourites and your all time favourite. Lets get a good discussion going here, eh people. see how long we can keep a good intelligent conversation going for. Thank you.

For me, it's a 3-way tie between Kerry Gammill, George Perez, and Bob McLeod.

Although Doug Mahnke's coming up mighty close on their heels.... ;D King Krypton - see my Superman script treatment at

I'm not in the mood for intelligent conversation. How about petty name-calling?

God, I'm bored.

I think I can oblige both of you. I like Bryne's Superman the best. followed by Gammil's. The art I really dislike is some of the newer art that came after Supe's rebirth such as Bogdanove. -Mario

I know no one will agree with me, but........

Alex Ross (Little too realistic sometimes however, when I want serious reading he's good). Dan Jurgens John Byrne (Although he screwed up the spiderman origin, I love what he did with Supes and Wonder Woman during his run).

Oh, man, this will create arguments. The funny thing about Superman is only the real top-notch guys do him the best as the character has eveolved. Here's my list and strengths if they can be added dependent on the artist:

Joe Shuster (co-creator, made Supes look very tough) Wayne Boring (built on Shuster and made Superman even more muscle bound) Curt Swan (brought out the humanity of the character) Neal Adams (made him very realistic a la advertsising art style and very commercial) Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (made Superman a figure of grace) Jerry Ordway (combined influences of Joe Shuster's design with Wally Wood and Alex Raymond's technique, making Superman look very powerful) Bob McLeod (slick commercial version) Ross Andru (put Superman into an artistic feel not unlike Burne Hogarth) Alex Ross (made Superman in an illsutrative fashion a la Norman Rockwell) Steve Rude (made a very animated style of illustration on Superman inspired by the 1940s cartoons) Kurt Schaffenberger (combined whimsy with slick comic book illustration, check out any '60s Lois Lanes)

There's my list and welcome to it.

I always find it amusing when people bag on Bog's work. He was to me, one of the more refreshing Supes artists in a long time. He was the total antithesis of most of the Image clones that were cropping up at the time. The inking got sloppy from time to time, but his work exuded a power that not many others capture. His panels always seemed somewhat animated. He also possessed something that many popular comic artists today don't have, pure drawing ability. I mean Michael Turner is one of the most popular artists in comics today and he wishes he could draw as well as Bog! He draws one pose of the same female character constantly, and people eat it up!

While I personally am not a fan of Jon Bogdanove's work, I'm not going to criticize him. And I'm certainly not going to say he isn't talented (just look at Man of Steel #37 during Zero Hour). His style just doesn't appeal to me. One good thing about the past couple of years of Superman comics has been the variety of styles of art. You know what they say about variety...

Actually, Bog gives Supes a nostlgic feel, although I like his early Man of Steel work more than now, but he's solid.

I'll have to disagree...I think that the worst S-man Artist was Gil Kane. All kinds of people loved him but I hated his art! He was one of the reasons I stopped collecting some Superman titles for a while.
