Lex was originally Alexei Luthor, a Russian first name with a German last name. He tried to ignite World War II and was thwarted by Superman, of course. Eventually, Alexei Luthor was relegated to Earth-Two (here we go with the Crisis on Infinite Crossovers) and was vaporized by Brainiac.

The 1986 reboot turned Lex into a white-collar criminal with a new backstory. Alexander Luthor grew up in the Metropolis slums with an abusive father and was a schoolmate of Perry White, though they had a falling-out and Lex would often try to acquire or kill the Daily Planet because of it. His first crime was killing his parents for insurance money.

By 2004, Lex’s backstory was altered yet again to coincide with the backstory of SMALLVILLE: his father is the wealthy Lionel Luthor, who was the one who killed his parents for insurance money. Lex befriends a young Clark Kent in Smallville, but is fundamentally disturbed and alienated from people. How do they explain the discontinuity? Well, Superboy-Prime is trying to escape his reality and hammering on the border between realities, which created ripples that rewrote history. Naturally.
