Let's see...offhand I can think of Krypto, Streaky, Comet, one of the Protys and maybe Beppo.

The cat was Streaky, the horse, Comet and the monkey, Beppo. The Protys were the little 'chameleon' guys, one of whom sacrificed his 'life' to save, let's see, was it Lightning Lad? Can't recall offhand, but he/it was replaced by Proty II. HTH.

Okay, but who was who? Krypto's the dog, but who were the cat, horse, monkey, etc?

Speaking of getting out or in wasn't there a story were Krypto applied for membership two a group of super powered canine heroes. and they wouldn't let him in?

Yep. The 'Space Canine Patrol Agency', which featured such members as Chameleon Collie, Mammoth Mutt, Bull Dog, Hot Dog, Paw Pooch, Tusky Husky, and Prophetic Pup. I am not making this up.
