kryptonite

Anybody remember the imaginary tale where this occurred? Can you guess which magazine in which it was published? (Issue number not necessary). Does anybody remember what it did to Superman?
I read in a somewhat recent Wizard magazine that in Jan. 2000 there would be kryptonite for sale, in a glass dome, for around $149.00. Has anyone read this? Where does one find it?
